The Campus Administration has introduced the following safety requirements for all indoor commencement ceremonies this fall, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY:

ALL ATTENDEES must present a negative COVID test result from a sample taken no more than 72 hours in advance of the ceremony start time.  This applies to all graduates and guests, including children.  We have introduced this requirement for both vaccinated and unvaccinated attendees.  ALL ATTENDEES must present the negative COVID test result.

The test result must provide documentation that includes the following:

  • First & last name of the tested individual must be provided – this information must match your ID.
  • Date of sample collection – it must be a sample taken no more than 72 hours ahead of the ceremony start time.
  • Test result:  It must be NEGATIVE – if the result is positive, we are very sorry that you cannot be admitted to the ceremony.

Either Antigen or PCR is allowed.  A lab/third party must process the test (i.e., you CANNOT use tests you administer at home and determine the results yourself).

It has to be a test performed by a lab/third party.  The result must be an electronic document that you can print.  You can also present your test result via electronic means at the ceremony (like on an iPhone), but it would be faster to have a print-out in hand, because your ticket will be electronic, and working on the phone to find two electronic documents takes longer and could make you late.  The sample must not be collected more than 72 hours ahead of your ceremony.  For example, the sample can be from two days before (48 hours), but it cannot be from four days before (96 hours).  If your ceremony is at 2:00 pm on Sunday, you would need to have your sample collected for the COVID test after 2:00 pm on the prior Thursday.

An onsite COVID testing option is available to a limited extent.  It will involve graduates and guests coming to the testing tent alongside Royce Hall (the east side of the building) on the day of their ceremony.

Guests and graduates must bring this particular brand and product of home COVID test kit:

Everyone who pursues this option must arrive in the testing area with the test kit in the box unopened and not tampered with.

NOBODY CAN ADMINISTER THIS TEST ON THEMSELVES AT HOME OR OFF CAMPUS AND BRING THE RESULTS TO CAMPUS FOR THE EVENT.  Such test results will not be honored.  It will not be considered a valid test result.

In the testing area, each guest or graduate will unpackage the test kit and administer the test on themselves.  Staff in the test area will supervise the reading of the results to determine whether to approve the guest or graduate for entry to the ceremony.

There is an estimate that only a couple hundred attendees will be able to be accommodated with this option on a given day, for the entire day, because of the testing area’s capacity.  This means that a very, very small fraction of each ceremony’s guests and graduates could pursue this option.

Your best approach would be to receive your acceptable test results before the day of your ceremony, without expecting to arrive at the ceremony without a test result.  Anyone expecting to arrive for a ceremony without an acceptable negative COVID test result already in hand must assume that the greatest chance is that they will miss their ceremony and be invited to come to a ceremony in June 2022 instead.

NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED WITHOUT AN ACCEPTABLE NEGATIVE COVID TEST RESULT.

Masks must be worn the entire time that attendees (including children) are inside Royce Hall.  Masks must be appropriate and must cover both the nose and mouth at all times.  All graduates must wear their mask during their crossing of the stage.  A photograph will be taken of the graduates crossing the stage while wearing their mask; however, as part of the ceremony, there will also be a professional photographer to take official graduation pictures on the exterior terrace of the building, and masks can be taken off briefly for those photographs.  After the photographs are taken, the masks must be worn again as the graduates re-enter the building.

ANNOUNCEMENT:  AUGUST 30, 2021 – 10:30 pm

Unfortunately, our ceremonies must remain at a set percentage of the auditorium size as a COVID safety precaution, and this prevents us from offering additional guest tickets at this time.  These restrictions also prevent us from moving your tickets to another ceremony.

If you are an eligible member of the Class of 2020 and you:

  • choose not to request tickets for the fall ceremonies
  • do not to claim the tickets you requested, or

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  AUGUST 27, 2021 – 5:30 pm

DUE TO PHYSICAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS IMPLEMENTED AS A COVID SAFETY PRECAUTION:  Ceremony sizes have now been set to promote physical distancing whenever possible in our audience.  We have to freeze, immediately, our requests for additional guest tickets beyond the four that have been guaranteed per graduate, and this freeze applies to all ceremonies on our schedule.

New requests to receive a ceremony assignment or to switch ceremony times must discontinue as well, to maintain ceremony size.

To ensure as much physical distancing among audience members as possible, we are implementing an additional 4:30 pm ceremony on each of the afternoons.  As our graduates and guests check in for the 2:00 pm ceremony, if they would prefer the greater opportunity for physical distancing in the audience, we will be extending an invitation to the 4:30 event for the first 100+ graduates who are interested as they check in.

To receive your tickets to these ceremonies, you will receive an email from the Central Ticket Office (CTO) that enables you to access your electronic or print-at-home tickets (depending on the format you requested).  Here are the instructions for receiving your tickets and helpful FAQs about that process.  If you need assistance with claiming your tickets after you receive the email message from CTO, you can reach their customer service line at (310) 825-2101 or email cto@tickets.ucla.edu.

If you have not yet received an email from cto@tickets.ucla.edu about your tickets it could be for two reasons:

  1. You have not yet acknowledged the terms and COVID-related precautions of these ceremonies (they are repeated on this page below).  You must submit this questionnaire to acknowledge these terms, and that begins the process of claiming your tickets.
  2. You requested your tickets subsequent to the most recent upload of ticket data, and it will be a day or two before you receive the ticket email.  The tickets are not uploaded instantly.

AGAIN, IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE:

If you are an eligible member of the Class of 2020 and you:

  • choose not to request tickets for the fall ceremonies
  • do not to claim the tickets you requested, or
  • are for any reason unable to use the tickets you have picked up

By not participating this fall, you have not missed anything; UCLA will look forward to celebrating your achievements in the spring.  Details about these ceremonies for the Class of 2020 will be available in January 2022.

Our ceremonies in Royce Hall will follow our local (Los Angeles County) precautions to prevent the spread of COVID at such events.  This includes the following:

We are requiring masks indoors at all times, and to enter the event, all attendees (graduates and guests) must present a negative COVID test result based on a sample taken no more than 72 hours before the event start time.  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS REQUIREMENT.  Both vaccinated and unvaccinated attendees must present the negative COVID test result.  Children of all ages, for example, will need to present the negative COVID test result that is described above.  We will implement physical distancing for the audience inside the auditorium in every way we can.  We are maintaining a focused ceremony program, too, to limit exposure.

Also, we are reducing pressure to attend by offering tickets to the June ceremonies instead of the fall ceremonies if any eligible graduate chooses not to request fall tickets, chooses not to pick up tickets they requested, or chooses not to use tickets they have picked up.

Please note that ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS may be introduced by our local government, including a change to allowing only vaccinated attendees at these events, WITH NO EXCEPTIONS.  We will post all updates to the status of our COVID safety precautions on this page.

PLEASE NOTE:  These COVID safety precautions will be uniformly enforced, and they apply to all attendees.  If you are not prepared on the day of the ceremony with your negative COVID test result, the ceremonies in June 2022 will be your best option to be recognized for your achievements, and we look forward to honoring you at those events!

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS FOR THE FALL CEREMONIES:

To receive your tickets AFTER you have been assigned to a ceremony, you must submit this questionnaire, which requires you to acknowledge all of the following:

I understand that to be admitted to the ceremony my guests and I must present a negative COVID test result for the ticket holder, and the reported test must have been administered no more than 72 hours prior to the time the ceremony begins.  (Having a paper copy of the test result is preferred.)  No exceptions will be made.

I understand that anyone attempting to use a ticket for a ceremony without the proper documentation (a negative test result) will be denied entry to Royce for the ceremony.  No exceptions will be made.

I understand that while my guests and I are inside Royce Hall, we must wear a face mask that covers both our nose and mouth at all times.  We will not be admitted to the ceremony if we are not wearing such a mask.  All graduates will be required to cross the stage while wearing a mask.  No exceptions will be made.

I will communicate all of the information above – about the negative COVID test result documentation requirement and the mask requirement – to all of my guests at the ceremony.

In the event of rescheduling, I understand that additional public health guidance and restrictions may be imposed to prevent the spread of COVID and could require the campus to delay one or more of the ceremonies this fall until the June 2022 commencement time frame.  If my assigned ceremony gets rescheduled, the new date/time and the tickets will be available at a future date.  I will be sent an email by the College Commencement Office with the details.  I will keep my email address up to date in MyUCLA so that I can be contacted about the rescheduled ceremony.  [At this time (August 26, 2021), there is neither an intention to reschedule nor a need to reschedule any ceremonies.]

I grant permission to be photographed at this event and to be shown in the video livestream feed of graduates crossing the stage when my name is read.  My name will appear as a caption below my image during the livestream.

Dear UCLA Class of 2020:

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last spring, we promised graduates in the Class of 2020 that we would honor them with in-person commencement ceremonies as soon as it is safe to do so with their families and friends present. Today, we are writing to share information about UCLA Class of 2020 in-person ceremonies, the first of which will take place in early fall of 2021.

On June 22, 2021, the College will announce the dates when we will hold the first of these in-person ceremonies for your graduating class, as well as how many ceremonies will be offered on those days. We will also announce at that time when and how to request tickets. The ceremonies will be held indoors on the UCLA campus, during weekends (days and evenings), at Royce Hall – where we had hoped to celebrate your accomplishments at the end of spring 2020. They will be livestreamed as well. These ceremonies will operate under campus safety guidelines and possibly under restrictions from the California State Department of Public Health.

Undergraduate and master’s-level degree recipients from all departments and programs in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, the UCLA International Institute, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, the UCLA School of Nursing, and the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television are invited to participate in the ceremonies if they received their degrees in fall 2019, winter 2020, spring 2020, and summer 2020. If you completed your degree in fall 2020 and received approval for a special inclusion petition to participate in the 2020 College Commencement, you will be included, too. Initially we will be able to offer four free tickets to each graduate for family and friends. Depending on the indoor location on campus, more tickets may be available upon request during the ticketing period.

The ceremonies are being developed based on feedback from the survey of UCLA College graduates we conducted in the spring of 2020. There will be an individual recognition with names read as the graduates cross the stage, and we plan to offer the opportunity for all graduates at these ceremonies to celebrate with faculty representing their academic area. We will closely follow the style of the smaller ceremonies that were held in person before the pandemic at which individuals were recognized; however, all ceremonies will be open to every member of the Class of 2020 (bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients) without regard to the degree or program completed (i.e., there will be no ceremonies held for separate departments, programs, or professional schools). A professional photographer will be present to record the moment each graduate crosses the stage.

Caps, gowns, and sashes will be available for order in advance of the ceremonies, and an announcement about the ordering process will be posted on June 22. Our goal is to be flexible and to invite our graduates to celebrate in business attire, in caps and sashes, or in other regalia combinations if they prefer not to wear gowns. What we want most is for you to gather with us at one of these ceremonies with your family and friends. That was our promise to you in spring 2020, and we intend to honor you in this way.

Please note that the number of ceremonies held will depend on the demand for them, and dates after fall are being considered for additional ceremonies. After we have held ceremonies for the Class of 2020, we will hold similar in-person ceremonies for the Class of 2021, which will remain separate from those offered to your graduating class. Any questions you may have about these ceremonies will be answered after June 22. Thank you for your patience as our planning process moves forward.

CEREMONY INFORMATION

Can I participate? You are invited to participate if you are a member of the Class of 2020 and have received your bachelor’s or master’s-level degree from the UCLA College of Letters and Science, the UCLA International Institute, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, the UCLA School of Nursing, or the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television, and your degree must be posted in the student records system with one of the following terms: Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020, or Summer 2020. If your degree is posted with Fall 2020 as the term, you need to receive a special inclusion petition (SIP) to participate as a member of the Class of 2020. If you have received a SIP already, you can participate as a member of the Class of 2020. Technically, the Class of 2021 includes graduates who completed their degrees in Fall 2020, Winter 2021, Spring 2021, and Summer 2021, and in-person ceremonies are being planned for the Class of 2021.  More information about those 2021 events will be available in the coming months and will be posted on a page similar to this one.

What about COVID? The campus does not yet know what the COVID conditions will be in Los Angeles County as this fall progresses; therefore, the plans made for these ceremonies may have to change if restrictions are imposed by the public health authorities. As the ceremony dates approach, we will continually update this site with the most-current information regarding these ceremonies and any rules that the campus and our ceremony participants must follow.

Either one, two, or three ceremonies will be offered each day, with ceremonies available in the morning, afternoon, and/or evening.

An additional ceremony for the Class of 2020 will be offered during commencement weekend in June 2022, for graduates who cannot attend a ceremony this fall.

How do I get my tickets? On Tuesday, July 6, 2021, a link will appear at the top of this page to lead eligible graduates to the ticket preference survey. This survey will be available for one week, and then it will close. A limited number of graduates will have access to the survey at any time, to avoid crashing the survey system because too many graduates access it at once. On the survey you will be able to request one FREE ticket for yourself (to a single ceremony) and up to four FREE tickets for your guests at the ceremony. You will also be able to indicate how many additional FREE guest tickets you would like to receive if any are available. On the survey you will provide four preferences for your ceremony: Your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choice date and time.

After the survey closes on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, a lottery will be held to determine which ceremony choice each graduate receives. Given demand per ceremony, the number of guest tickets each graduate receives will be determined. Your odds in the lottery are the same whether you complete the preference survey on the day it opens or on the last day it is available, so please complete it before the deadline, but also please be patient: It may take several attempts for you to successfully enter the system and submit your response. If all four of your preferred ceremonies are full, you will be assigned to a ceremony where there is space available.

On July 16, 2021, a MyUCLA notice will be posted to your account with your assigned ceremony and how many guest tickets you will receive. In August, your mobile (electronic) tickets will be sent to you via email — both your graduate ticket and your guest tickets — and you will be able to distribute your guest tickets to your family and friends, one ticket per guest.

What can I wear to the ceremony? Graduates can choose to wear business attire — or they can wear the traditional gown — along with any combination of UCLA regalia. If you have your cap, sash, and other regalia from spring 2020, you can wear it for the ceremony. You can also order regalia starting July 25, 2021, at Graduation Essentials.

Where can my guests and I park for the ceremony? On the day of your ceremony, there will be signs guiding you to the best available parking structure for your event.  Parking Structure 5 is closest to Royce Hall.  Accessible parking information is found at the Royce Hall website.  The parking fee for these events will be approximately $14.  Here are the instructions for using a touch-free method of purchasing your parking:

To make parking accommodations via the Park Mobile app, you must complete a one-time setup process including account creation, the addition of a payment method, and the addition of the vehicle you will be parking. Once this has been completed, all parking payments for the future can be made via a few simple taps. The app interface functions as a map. In order to pay for parking simply tap on the icon paired with the structure you have parked in, select the amount of time you wish to purchase parking for, and hit “Start Parking.” Park Mobile offers convenience in the elimination of lot attendants and the need to interact with a shared kiosk.

ELECTRONIC PAYMENT METHOD OPTION VIA PARK MOBILE

  1. Download the Park Mobile app for your Apple or Android device: https://parkmobile.io/
  2. Create an account using your email address.
  3. Provide your license plate number and state where your vehicle is registered.
  4. Then setup your method of payment.
  5. Now you’re ready to park, choose the park tab second from the left at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Enter Royce Hall Event Zone Number: 2552 – this is valid for Structures 5, 4, 3, & 2.  For ADA Parking use Zone Number 2500
  7. Hit “Choose Duration” and select “Day Rate.”

Am I on the email list for these ceremonies? There are no plans to send any further email announcements about these ceremonies. If your degree has been awarded, if it was posted with one of the correct terms for you to be in the Class of 2020, and if it was awarded by one of the participating academic areas of campus, you will be able to request tickets (see above: “Can I participate?”). All information about the ceremonies will be made available on this page, and the heading at the top of the page will indicate when the page was last updated. Regardless, please be certain to keep your email address up to date in MyUCLA, because your tickets will be sent to the email address that we have in our records. Check your email account’s spam or junk folder when you expect to receive the tickets in August.

I’ve read this page thoroughly, but I have a question. Whom can I ask? This webpage is updated with all of the available information about these ceremonies as it becomes available. The event organizers can be reached in Message Center at the following links for student questions and public questions.

Why aren’t you offering individual ceremonies for each major and degree program? Our goal is to provide our graduates with equity in the experience of these ceremonies – meaning all ceremonies will include the same celebratory moments – as well as equity in the opportunity for all graduates to participate. To ensure all ceremonies are similar, the College plans to hold them in the same venue. If we were to have program-level ceremonies, this decision would require some very large departments to hold multiple events to accommodate all of their participating graduates, and as a consequence, their graduates could choose from multiple ceremony dates and times. All other programs would need to be grouped with other majors and degrees to fill their time slot, and students in these smaller programs would have only one date and time offered for their celebration. If these small-program graduates (and their families and friends) are not available at their ceremony’s only time, they would be excluded from celebrating in person. Consequently, there would be inequity in participation when comparing the opportunity provided to graduates from larger vs. smaller departments. The College, which includes the largest majors/programs on campus, could not offer intimate ceremonies to a specific list of very small programs but offer larger, combined ceremonies to everyone else. That approach would create inequity in the experience of our graduates.
