Unit 18 Initial Continuing, Merit, and Promotion Deadlines
*CAP Cases are Initial Continuing Appointments (50% and above) and all Promotion to Senior Continuing Lecturer cases.
As a reminder, due to the volume of cases, CAP requires 2-3 months.
EXTENSIONS FOR UNIT 18 CAP REVIEW CASES MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE DUE TO SUMMER RECESS. (CAP does not meet from August to mid-September.) Also, note that faculty may not be physically present mid-June to September. Therefore, please plan accordingly.

#PROMOTION TO SENIOR CONTINUING LECTURER – Article 7d
CAP Case irrespective of the % and must be effective July 1st regardless of previous effective dates.
Let your Unit 18 Analyst know when a Continuing Lecturer makes the request.
Eligibility:
- At least 9 years of service as Continuing Lecturer
- Must have had at least 2 consecutive positive merit advancements (following Initial Continuing Appointment)
- Continuing Lecturer must make the request to be considered for Promotion
- Only eligible at the normative merit cycle
- Minimum 9% increase, if approved
- If disapproved, the review file be assessed as a Merit review
Teaching Effectiveness Review (TER) – Pre-Six Academic Review
Article 7a.F – Unit 18 faculty with a two or three-year reappointment shall undergo a Pre-Six Academic Review except when there is a scheduled Excellence Review during the appointment.
The TER must be concluded prior to but no later than June 1st for both 9/12 and 9/9 reappointments. This includes the final determination from the Dean. That said, the TER must be concluded well in advance of June 1st.

Review Procedures
- Department must notify the Unit 18 Faculty Member in writing no less than thirty (30) calendar days in advance of the review, its timing, criteria, and procedure.
- Submit the following to Interfolio, which will make up each Pre-6 Unit 18 Faculty Member’s review dossier.
- Cover Page
- History Record
- Teaching Tabulation
- CV
- Self-Statement
- Classroom Observation Report
- Student Evaluations
- In addition to syllabi, up to six (6) additional materials relevant to effective teaching.
- Certifications
- Depending on department practice, may be considered by the voting members of the department. If so, department will add additional comments, which may include faculty vote.
- Department Chair’s recommendation
- Reappointment Consideration
- If the review is favorable, and there is a programmatic need, the Unit 18 Faculty Member shall receive a salary point merit increase at the commencement of the next reappointment.
- If the review is unfavorable, the Unit 18 Faculty Member will not be reappointed.

Supplemental Notice Deadlines
When course(s) are not fully known when the appointment or reappointment letter is issued, a Supplemental Notice must be issued no later than 30 days prior to the commencement of the term of service.

15th Quarter Notice (Excellence Review)
Upon completion of 15 quarters, the department should initiate the Excellence Review process. The department and candidate need to proceed with the evaluation of teaching excellence for consideration of appointment to Continuing Lecturer.
Statement of Interest (SOI)
Article 7a.J.1 – Pre-6 Unit 18 Faculty with current appointment who submit a SOI will be considered for reappointment prior to the consideration of external applicants. SOI must be submitted by Pre-6 Unit 18 Faculty to the Department Chair by the deadlines below.

Assessment Action
Article 7a.J.3 – Reappointment from the initial appointment to a 2-year reappointment is based on an assessment made by the Department Chair. The Assessment Action should be made on the basis of demonstrated competence in the field, teaching ability, academic responsibility, and other assigned duties.
Note: Conclusion of the Assessment Actions must be finalized during the quarter they are teaching.
Supplemental Assignment
Article 7a.C.6 – Active Pre-6 Lecturers who are appointed at less than 100% time may be subsequentially offered additional courses temporarily due to academic need. If a Pre-6 Lecturer receives three years of consecutive Supplemental Assignments (regardless or workload value and course), on the third year, the Supplemental Assignment will be added to their base percentage.
