TEMPORARY ACADEMIC FACULTY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

  1. Visiting Professor Series

    The Visiting Professor title “is used to designate one who either has held a faculty position at, or is on leave or retired from, an academic institution; or whose research, creative activities, or professional achievement make a Visiting appointment appropriate.” The CALL, Visiting Professor Series.  Visiting professors may be hired for one quarter, two quarters, or for an entire academic year.

    1. Search Procedures
      A search should be conducted to select the best qualified person if the position is due to a programmatic need.  Please see The CALL for guidelines on recruitment (Appendix 22 and Appendix 23).  For non-citizen candidates, please see Miscellaneous in this section.

    2. Submitting the action.   Please submit the following to the L&S Personnel Office:
      1. Approval form for Temporary Appointments/Actions
      2. Candidate’s current CV
      3. Recruitment Selection Data and Compliance form.  Original plus one  (1) copy.  Copies of placed advertisements must be attached to the form.

    3. Temporary Faculty Appointment form.   The following information must be included:
      1. Title and title code.
        For the academic year (9/12): Vstg Asst Prof (1308); Vstg Assoc Prof (1208); Vstg Prof (1108). 
        For 1 or 2 quarters (9/9):  Vstg Asst Prof (1302); Vstg Assoc Prof (1202); Vstg Prof (1102).
      2. Begin and end dates. 
        For the academic year (9/12): Fall: 7/1-10/31; Wtr: 11/1-2/28(29); Spr: 3/1-6/30.
        For 1 or 2 quarters (9/9): Fall: 10/1-12/31; Wtr: 1/1-3/31; Spr: 4/1-6/30. 
      3. Salary:  Annual and monthly salaries for the proposed appointment must be taken from the Academic Standard Table of Pay Rates, page 1 and page 2.  Visiting faculty salaries are not subject to range adjustments.  Visiting faculty may be hired without salary.
      4. Percent of time:  List % for each quarter.
      5. Courses:  List titles of courses for each quarter.  Departments should have their own set of course workload guidelines for this series.

      Please complete the remainder of the form as appropriate.  The recommendation from the department Chair (including availability of FTE, justification of salary level and programmatic need for course(s) to be taught) should be placed under “Additional Information,” or submitted as a separate letter.

    4. Routing and Approval
      The L&S Personnel office staff will review the temporary faculty appointment paperwork and then forward it to the appropriate Dean for approval.  An appointment submitted after the quarter has begun will require the Vice Chancellor’s approval for retroactivity.

    Miscellaneous

  2. Restrictions on service.   May be appointed for a maximum of six (6) quarters of consecutive service.  
  3. Not a US citizen; visa issues.  The department should contact the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) for answers to questions about visa status, employment restrictions and requirements.
  4. Summer salary. Eligible for summer ninths if year-long appointment (July 1 through June 30).
