  1. Joint Appointments Without Salary and Split Appointments

Joint Appointments:
UCLA’s policy on joint appointments can be found in The CALL,Appendix 15, I.  The Chair of the department proposing the joint appointment is responsible for coordinating the process.  A joint appointment should not be proposed in conjunction with a merit increase or promotion.   Joint appointments require a minimal dossier.

  1. Submitting the action
    1. For an Assistant Professor joint appointment, submit an original plus one (1) copy of the dossier.
    2. For an Associate Professor or Professor joint appointment, submit an original plus two (2) copies of the dossier.

  2. Dossier Contents  (Use the appropriate Data Summary pages from the L&S Website.)
    1. Joint Appointment Data Summary cover page.  A joint appointment is without salary.  The proposed rank and step should reflect the candidate’s current status.
    2. History record (updated by the home department).
    3. Data Summary vote page. Votes are required from both primary and secondary departments.  The sum of the vote tally must equal the number eligible to vote.  For additional guidelines on faculty voting rights, please see The CALL, Appendix 4
    4. Current CV.
    5. Departmental assessments. Chairs from both departments must provide summaries of the departmental meetings regarding the joint appointment. The first paragraph of both departmental letters should reiterate the vote.

    Publications and teaching evaluations should not be submitted to the College.

  3. Waiver Option
    1. See The CALL, Appendix 15 for policy and procedures regarding the joint appointment waiver option.  This option allows the candidate to waive review by the secondary department.
    2. With the original L&S Waiver Option For Joint WOS Cover page, please submit a current employment history record, vote pages and recommendations from each department chair.  Instructions are printed on the waiver option cover page.

    The Deans have approval authority for waiver options for faculty at all ranks.

Split Appointments:
“A split appointment is one in which the FTE of the faculty member is split between two or more departments.” per The CALL, Appendix 15, II.  A waiver option is not allowed for a split appointment.

  2. Dossier Contents  (Use the appropriate Data Summary pages from the L&S Website.)
    1. Split Appointment Data Summary cover page.  There is no “Split” Appointment Cover page.  Please draw a line through “Joint” and type next to or above it, “Split”.  For a split appointment, be specific on the FTE distribution.  Example:  Primary Department:  Department of Animals(0.50 FTE); Proposed Secondary Department: Department of Plants(0.50 FTE).  The proposed rank, step, and salary should reflect the candidate’s current status.
    2. History record (updated by the home department).
