I. ASSISTANT RESEARCHERS

  1. Appointments

The Assistant Researcher rank (Steps I-IV at UCLA) is part of the Professional Research Series which includes Associate Researcher (Steps I-III at UCLA) and Researcher ranks (Steps I-IX, and Above-Scale).  An Assistant Researcher is appointed for one (1) year term or less.  The Appointment can begin on any day.  There is no limit on service at this rank.  Renewal of appointments can be for one year at a time.  Additional procedural information can be found in the Summary of Procedures, #9.

    1. Search Procedures
Recruitment searches should be conducted to select the best qualified person for the Assistant Researcher position advertised.  If the Assistant Researcher is to be paid from an outside grant or award, a “Continuing Exception – No Search” may be appropriate.  For more details, please see The CALL, Appendix 23, for guidelines on faculty searches and exceptions (waivers) to searches.

    2. Submitting the Action
Please submit the following to the L&S Personnel Office:
      1. Original plus one (1) copy of the dossier.
      2. Non-Ladder Academic Recruitment and Appointment Compliance Form.  Original plus one (1) copy. Copies of placed advertisements must be attached to the form.

    3. Dossier Contents in the order below:  (Use appropriate Data Summary pages from the APO Website.)
      1. Assistant Professional Research Data Summary cover page.  Annual salaries should be taken from the Professional Research Series Salary Scale.  A Dean can approve a proposed annual within the five columns of the Assistant Researcher rank.  An annual higher than the maximum for each step is considered an off-scale annual and requires Vice Chancellor approval.
      2. Departmental assessment.  This is a letter written by the Chair, or a letter from the principal investigator, endorsed by the Chair, recommending the appointment.
      3. CV.

    4. Routing and Approval
The Deans have final approval authority on Assistant Researcher appointments. When an off-scale salary higher than Dean's authority to approve accompanies an appointment, the salary must be approved by the Vice Chancellor. The College will notify the department once the case is approved.
