What is DLAP?
DLAP stands for the Diversified Liberal Arts Program. DLAP is not a major, but an undergraduate specialization
that focuses on preparing prospective California elementary school teachers. This specialization IS NOT the same as a teaching credential. To earn an
elementary teaching credential, you must first receive an undergraduate degree. Then, students typically
complete an accredited credential program offered through a graduate school of education.
DLAP prepares prospective elementary school teachers to enter a graduate credential program by
having them demonstrate subject matter competency in the areas commonly taught in California
elementary schools. DLAP affords the student an opportunity to acquire a general liberal arts
education which will be noted on the student's transcript and diploma, and is a way to bolster
preparation for applying to graduate credential programs leading to teaching positions for
grades K-6.

Who administers DLAP?
The UCLA College of Letters and Science oversees the DLAP specialization and has academic counselors who specialize in dealing with DLAP students.

What is the difference between DLAP and the Education Studies Minor?
DLAP is a very specific program with the goal of preparing students to go on to programs for multiple subjects teaching credentials. With DLAP students take courses that will give them a background in the subjects commonly taught in elementary schools. The Education Studies Minor, on the other hand, is more broad and is designed to educate the student in the policies, social issues, history, and laws pertaining to "education." The Education Studies Minor is not a program that specifically prepares one for teaching, although it is for those interested in learning more about many professional research issues confronting educators. Some undergraduate students choose do both DLAP and the Education Studies Minor in addition to their major. For more information about the Education Studies Minor, visit their web site at: http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/edminor/
Back to questions
Can you specialize in DLAP and minor in Education Studies at the same time?
Yes, you may complete both DLAP and the Education Studies Minor provided that you can satisfy all of your
requirements within the unit maximum.
Back to questions
Who can I talk to about DLAP?
There are three Counseling Assistants and a Coordinator who can answer
your various DLAP questions. Please visit the DLAP Counseling page (www.college.ucla.edu/up/dlap/counseling.html) for further information
regarding how to get DLAP advice.
Back to questions
How do I officially enroll in DLAP?
You officially sign up for DLAP by filing a blue petition. You only need to fill out the request portion of the petition and sign the bottom. Blue petitions can be acquired and turned in at either window outside A-316 Murphy Hall. Even though it is not required, students are strongly advised to attend DLAP workshops, which discuss essential information about DLAP and how it applies to Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential programs.
Back to questions
When do I officially enroll in DLAP?
There is no required time period for enrolling in DLAP. However, it is best that you do so early in your UCLA career because there are numerous requirements that need to be fulfilled. Also, it is wise to attend a DLAP workshop and/or see a DLAP counselor prior to enrolling to make sure DLAP is right for you.
Back to questions
Where can I find out what classes I need to take?

Back to questions
What are the best majors for DLAP?
There are no "best" majors to go with DLAP. You can choose ANY major and still participate in DLAP. However, popular majors among DLAP
students include Psychology, English, History, and Sociology.
Back to questions
Can the MSAT/CSET be waived by completing DLAP?
California elementary school districts and graduate school credential programs NO LONGER waive the MSAT/CSET exam. All elementary school teachers must now pass this exam.
Back to questions
What should I do if I am not at UCLA yet but I intend to transfer there and complete DLAP?
If you are a prospective UCLA transfer student and are interested in DLAP, you should look at the DLAP handbook on the Web site and see what college classes should count for DLAP requirements. Except the DLAP Core requirements, DLAP requirements may be satisfied by coursework taken at other colleges.
DLAP Core classes include: English Comp 120A, 130A, Math 38A, 38B, and 104. You should doublecheck your courses with a DLAP counselor by sending an e-mail to dlap@college.ucla.edu. However, it may take some time to respond since priority will be given to current UCLA students.
Also, you should save some of your coursework for the DLAP portfolio (see page 12 of the DLAP handbook) which will be due the quarter you graduate from UCLA.
Back to questions
How does IGETC completion affect DLAP?
IGETC completion does NOT fulfill all of DLAP's GE and foreign language requirements. For example, the foreign language
requirement (completion of UCLA foreign language level 3) must be satisfied with college level coursework--not
high school coursework. Contact DLAP counselors for more information about DLAP requirements.
Back to questions
Can I still complete DLAP even if I have already graduated from UCLA?
If you have earned your Bachelor's degree at UCLA, you may still complete DLAP requirements for an MSAT waiver provided that you have already completed at least 75% of the program's requirements. It is important that you consult a DLAP counselor to go over your remaining DLAP requirements and how you will fulfill them (if applicable). You will need to
present transcripts and syllabi (or course descriptions) from coursework taken outside of UCLA. You will be eligible to request an MSAT/CSET waiver letter upon completion of all DLAP requirements.
For further information, please contact a DLAP counselor at dlap@college.ucla.edu.
Back to questions
Can I complete DLAP if I earned my Bachelor's degree from another university?
Unfortunately, only current UCLA undergraduates and alumni who have completed their Bachelor's degrees at UCLA (and 75% of the program's requirements) are eligible to complete DLAP.
Prospective elementary school teachers wanting to complete their MSAT/CSET waiver programs should contact the colleges where they received their undergraduate degrees.
