UCLA McNair Research Scholars Program
Frequently Asked Questions

How is this program funded?
The UCLA McNair Research Scholars Program is a federally funded TRIO program by the US Department of Education.

When are applications available?
The applications are available at the beginning of the Fall quarter.

Is this individual research?
Yes. McNair Scholars execute senior thesis projects of their own design and imagination. But of course, they have significant input from faculty mentor, graduate students, and the McNair staff.

Can I do study abroad?
McNair Scholars must be in residence during the two years that they are in the program. We do make exceptions for Scholars who are conducting research abroad.

Are their classes that are required?
During their first year in the program and in the summer, McNair Scholars enroll in Honors courses (taken P/NP) in order to receive academic credit for their research. During their senior year, participants enroll in courses through their departmental major to receive credit for writing their senior thesis. Please refer to the two-year plan for more information.

Do I need to have a mentor when I apply?
While it is preferred that applicants have identify a faculty mentor prior to applying, it is not necessary. The McNair staff will help all scholars choose a mentor.

Can I change my topic after the application has been submitted?
Yes. We understand that ideas grow and evolve over time. But the research proposal should sound as firm and focused as possible. (Please do not propose more than one idea)

What if I don’t get into McNair? Can I still get into graduate school?
Absolutely! Graduate admissions committees want to see applicants who are passionate about their work, have strong writing skills, and have prior research experience. There are a number of resources available on campus to help you gain experience in these areas, including SPUR, PROPS, URSP, and departmental honors. You can also do a research project all on your own!
