Exploring Global Warming with Climate Models

Syukuro Manabe

6:00 P.M. Royce Hall, Room 314

Climate models are one of the most powerful tools for studying global warming.  Join Dr. Syukuro Manabe as he explores how climate models have evolved to become indispensable models of daily weather forecasting and virtual laboratories for investigating the physical mechanisms of climate change.   Manabe will also discuss predictions for global water cycle change, which will have a far-reaching impact on water availability worldwide.

Syukuro “Suki” Manabe is a meteorologist and climatologist who earned his Ph.D. at Tokyo University and serves as Senior Meteorologist and a visiting research collaborator at Princeton University.  He is known for developing the use of general circulation models and using high-speed computers to simulate global climate change and natural climate variations.  His honors include the Rossby Research Medal, the Bowie Medal, the Blue Planet Prize from the Asahi Glass Foundation and the Volvo Environment Prize.  He has served as a member of the US National Academy of Sciences since 1990.
